Sperry top sider quality lower?

I found a beautiful pair of all black Sperrys and got my usual size for boat shoes. They are so much narrower? Is this a new thing? I also noticed that the leather quality is terrible and they feel cheaply made. I've been wearing top siders my entire life, I've just been on a bit of a hiatus the past few years.
